Encounters with Japan

Japanese Studies in the Visegrad Four Countries

The present volume is the result of a collaborative effort among researchers affiliated with five centres of Japanese Studies in the V4 region: Eötvös Loránd University in Budapest, Károli Gáspár University of the Reformed Church in Hungary, Charles University in Prague, Adam Mickiewicz University in Poznan, and Masaryk University in Brno, Czech Republic. The book is published for the occasion of the Visegrad Group plus Japan Exchange Year 2014 which marked the 10th anniversary of the ‘V4' group of countries cooperation with Japan. This volume offers nine essays from various fields within the Japanese studies demonstrating the richness as well as the quality of the research taking place in our region. The topics that are covered range from issues of national identity to medicinal history, from post-Fukushima civil movements to economic thought, including studies on the history of modern Japanese martial arts, traditional ceremonial flags, symbolism of rites of passage, development of nō theatre, and textual analysis of Confucian texts. The volume will hopefully contribute to the consolidation of the symbolical ‘bridge' of cooperation between the V4 region and Japan, and between the region's countries.
